Doctors treating Illinois Rep. Deborah Mell say she's doing well following breast cancer surgery last month.
The University of Chicago Medical Center released an update on Mell's health Tuesday. Mell announced in June she'd been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
The 44-year-old Chicago Democrat had a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery on Aug. 10. She will undergo another reconstructive procedure and will take the drug tamoxifen. She chose the surgery because she has a family history of breast cancer.
University of Chicago surgeon Dr. Nora Jaskowiak says Mell is doing "extremely well." Her prognosis is very good because no lymph nodes were involved and the tissue around the tumor was free of cancer.
The hospital's update included a statement from Mell praising her doctors, nurses and hospital staff.
