LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Friends of a college student feared he had become the latest young man to drown in the Mississippi River after drinking in downtown La Crosse.

But, a search of the river for Tyler Pederson Monday morning ended when he turned up safe. The 23-year-old University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student was drinking with friends at Howie's bar and took off on his own about 2:30 a.m. Monday. His friends say they were worried when they couldn't find him and contacted police. Search boats were launched near Riverside Park.
