Search boats launched on river, Wis. man found safe

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Friends of a college student feared he had become the latest young man to drown in the Mississippi River after drinking in downtown La Crosse.

But, a search of the river for Tyler Pederson Monday morning ended when he turned up safe. The 23-year-old University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student was drinking with friends at Howie’s bar and took off on his own about 2:30 a.m. Monday. His friends say they were worried when they couldn’t find him and contacted police. Search boats were launched near Riverside Park.

The La Crosse Tribune says the West Salem man was discovered walking in La Crosse about 10 a.m. unaware anyone was searching for him.

Nine intoxicated college-age men have drowned in La Crosse area rivers since 1997.
