Johnsburg never had a chance.
With Jacobs junior quarterback Bret Mooney throwing for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns, the Golden Eagles thumped the undermanned Skyhawks 41-7 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game at Jacobs Athletic Field in Algonquin Friday night.
“We came out aggressive and scored early,” said Mooney. “I felt good with my release throwing the ball and I have great receivers who catch everything. The offensive line gave me plenty of time to throw and did a great job.”
Mooney, who connected on 8 of his first 9 passes, completed 16-of-22 with touchdown strikes to Greg Sidor (29 yards), Jake Gierlak (14 yards) and Steven Varela (72 yards).
The 72-yarder from Mooney to Varela was a perfectly executed screen pass.
“Everybody did their job on the screen pass,” said Mooney. “The line blocked perfectly and Steven ran great.”
Jacobs coach Bill Mitz was pleased with Mooney’s quarterback play.
“He did a good job of reading the defense and threw the ball very well,” said Mitz. “We have a lot of weapons and Bret did a good job of finding the open man.”
Junior receiver Hunter Williams snared 6 passes for 75 yards while Gierlak grabbed 4 passes for 56 yards and a TD.
Jacobs (2-0), which scored the first 35 points of the game in the first half, also rushed for 111 yards on 24 carries with 3 scores. The Golden Eagles, who only punted once in the game, compiled 375 yards of total offense with 20 first downs
Varela, who caught a touchdown pass, rushed 12 times for 70 yards and scored twice on runs of 16 and 1 yard.
Sidor, who also caught a TD pass from Mooney ran for 36 yards on 6 carries and scored on a 13-yard touchdown run.
The stingy and opportunistic Jacobs defense limited Johnsburg (0-2) to 162 yards of total offense and 9 first downs.
The Golden Eagles intercepted 3 passes from Skyhawk quarterback Nick Brengman, one each by Tom Savage, Sean McAvoy and Kyle Wright. Jacobs also recovered 2 fumbles, 1 each by Williams and Josh Narvaez.
“Overall we played well on both sides of the ball,” said Mitz. “It was a good home opener. I was really pleased the kids played with a lot of heart. I am pleased with the way we have played the first two games of the season.”Copyright © 2014 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
