Winfield man pleads guilty to obscenity in child porn case

A Winfield man accused of possessing child pornography has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge, court records show.

Kevin R. Smith, 24, of the 27W100 block of Chartwell Drive, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor obscenity Tuesday and was sentenced to two years of probation by DuPage County Judge Kathryn Creswell.

Smith had been accused of possessing pornographic videos of girls generally younger than 13. He told investigators he started viewing the images online by accident and eventually became more interested, prosecutors have said.

Smith could have faced up to seven years in prison if convicted of aggravated child pornography possession, as he was originally charged. His attorney has said he was a College of DuPage student with a disability.

Smith was arrested in Winfield after an investigation by police in neighboring Wheaton, which has a child pornography unit.
