Elgin as great as it always was

Many years ago we called on a fine jewelry and silver, china and gift store. The shop could compare with anything in Chicago and New York. The owner was most kind and considerate to this rookie salesman. When I mentioned the local fine watch company, he offered to take me to their factory. A lovely tour was extended to us. Then we visited the many fine parks, homes and riverfront places of beauty.

When a large casino opened up some years ago, we were reintroduced to this splendid tour. It was still beautiful and much has been added. Sad to say most of this downtown area has vacant stores. The widespread shopping malls have taken their toll.

However, this splendid place has risen above this history of misfortune. There is still so much to do and see — parks, riverfront areas, railway museum and an excellent downtown cafe that has inside and outside seating.

A wonderful day can be spent there for all.

We salute Elgin, Ill.
