A McHenry man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he tried to strangle a woman he had previously dated.
While responding to a report of a battery in progress Friday night in Crystal Lake, officers said, Steven K. Henshall attempted to flee but was arrested after a foot chase and brief struggle.
Police said Henshall located the victim on the 800 block of Virginia Road and confronted her. He is accused of telling the woman he intended to take her life while attempting to strangle her, police said.
The 43-year-old victim suffered injuries to her neck and both arms and was treated at the scene, according to Crystal Lake police. The woman declined any further treatment.
The victim was able to ward Henshall off before a group of nearby witnesses and police arrived at approximately 11:30 p.m..
The woman said Henshall made numerous threatening telephone calls and sent numerous threatening text messages before the attack, police said.
Henshall was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis.
Henshall was also wanted on a McHenry County warrant for failing to appear in a charge of driving with a suspended license, police said.
Henshall is being held at the McHenry County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
