Mid-Suburban League outlook

Prospect won its fourth straight MSL tournament in 2011 at the Bonnie Dundee Golf Course in Carpentersville with a score of 309, finishing ahead of the runner-up Fillies (323) and Fremd (348). “The MSL meet is always the first postseason event and it’s an honor to be MSL champs,” Prospect coach Jim Hamann said. “It’s definitely a goal to make it happen every year.” This year’s MSL meet on Sept. 27 will be hosted by Buffalo Grove at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course. “It’s a longer course, 5,700 yards for girls which poses a challenge for them there,” said Bison five-year coach Matt Myers. “And water can come into play. It’s a challenge but it’s fair. It will be fun to watch.”

Eight golfers who finished in the top 15 at the MSL meet are back this fall — Prospect’s Noreen Caporusso (75, tie for second), Barrington’s Heather Ciskowski (76, tie for fourth), Buffalo Grove’s Grace Kil (76, tie for fourth), Prospect’s Kiley Walsh (81, seventh), Fremd’s Angie Kim (85, eighth), Fremd’s Jennifer Kim (88, tied for 12th), Barrington’s Kelly Umphred (89, tied for 14th), Buffalo Grove’s Courtney Meyer (89, tied for 14th), Conant’s Carly Bryeans (89, tie for 14th).

Great eight at state

Eight returning area golfers placed in the top 60 in the 2011 Class AA two-round state tourney at the Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur (par 72) — Buffalo Grove’s Grace Kil (152, tied for fourth), Barrington’s Heather Ciskowski (159, tied for 11th), St. Viator’s Dana Gattone (159, tied for fourth), Barrington’s Julia Calbi (162, tied for 15th), Fremd’s Angie Kim (163, tied for 23rd), Prospect’s Kiley Walsh (165, tied 29th), Prospect’s Emma Menich (171, tied for 47th), Prospect’s Noreen Caporusso (173, tied for 55th).

The defending champs

For the first time in Prospect school history, there is a girls sports team defending state. Coach Jim Hamann welcomes back several key players from the 2011 state champs. “I think the girls feel proud and excited about the challenge,” Hamann said. “They are the first girls team to defend a state title at their school so they are excited to be in that position.” The Knights graduated two top seniors in individual state champ Allison Walsh (Bradley) and 2011 MSL runner-up Christine Garmoe (Wisconsin). But the Knights return several juniors in addition to senior Noelle Johnston. “We have a lot of experience coming back and our juniors are fantastic,” Hamann said. “We have three players back (Kiley Walsh, Noreen Caporusso and Emma Menich) who were in the state meet and also have back Noelle for her senior year. And Isabella Flach and Ally Scaccia had tremendous summers.”

Double duty

Buffalo Grove girls golf coach Matt Myers is the new girls sports coordinator at his school where he also teaches history. He becomes the second Mid-Suburban League girls golf coach to serve as a sports coordinator in District 214.

At Elk Grove, Jon Rowley is the boys sports coordinator. He has been at Elk Grove for 13 years and this is his second season as a varsity head coach.

Schoeck the dean of the MSL

Barrington Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck begins her 26th season. She was named the 2009 National High School Coach of the Year and has guided the Fillies to 11 MSL titles, 12 regional titles and nine appearances in the state finals, including a third-place finish in 1996. The Fillies won the MSL from 2004 to 2007 and have been West champs the last four years. Schoeck’s lineup this season will include junior Heather Ciskowski, who played No. 1 doubles in the state tennis meet as a freshman. In her first year golfing for Barrington as a sophomore, Ciskowski tied for fourth in the MSL meet and tied for 11th in the state meet. Julia Calbi, who was the MSL champion as a freshman, will not compete for the Fillies this season. “After much thought Julia has decided to dedicate her year working toward her goals with her swing coach,” Schoeck said. “She will not play on the team this season. We wish Julia every success with her golf and wish her the best.”

Lions den

St. Viator has been second the last two years in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Gattone placed 11th in the Class AA state meet and was second in the ESCC meet after winning the crown as a freshman. Stringfellow has been all-conference for the past three seasons.

Good start

In the opening week of the season, Fremd finished second in Conant’s Early Bird Invite, first in the Barrington Invite and won a pair of dual meets over Vernon Hills and Mundelein. The Vikings’ score of 318 in the Barrington Invite was their lowest mark in four seasons under coach Christine Vlaming.
