Chicago teachers start printing strike signs

Negotiations between the Chicago Teachers Union and the city are continuing, but the union has started printing strike signs just in case it needs them.

Union spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin says the union started to print thousands of signs Friday because the union wanted to make sure they were available if a strike was called. She said printing the signs is not an indication talks have broken down. She says the union hasn’t issued the 10-day strike notice that is required by law.

Teachers voted in June to authorize a strike. Last month the teachers and the school district reached an interim agreement on plans for a longer school day — a major sticking point in contract negotiations.

But they are both negotiating other issues, including wages and benefits.
