Schaumburg man posts bond after ‘out of control’ party

The 22-year-old Schaumburg man accused of barricading himself in his apartment with 18 other people Tuesday morning was released from custody Friday after paying 10 percent of his $1,500 bond.

John C. Martel, who turned 22 on Wednesday, was charged with one count disorderly conduct and one count of permitting a minor to become intoxicated. He apparently did not return home, as the apartment in the Schaumburg Villas neighborhood was still boarded up on Friday afternoon, the building empty and locked.

The door had to be replaced after the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System SWAT team forced its way into the apartment at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Beforehand, the group of people in the apartment refused to open the door for the police and barricaded themselves in, blocking the steel door with couches, police said.

As police officers heard a woman screaming for help and, later, heard somebody inside the apartment say that someone inside had been killed, the SWAT team took over. In the end, no one was dead, and 18 people were taken into custody. A 19th person was first taken to a hospital for an undisclosed reason and then to the Schaumburg police station.

Martel’s court date was set for Sept. 24.

Police said five minors at the party where charged with ordinance violations for consumption of alcohol by a minor. Several people, including the woman heard screaming inside the apartment, declined to sign complaints.

Schaumburg police said it amounted to a party that got out of control. The Schaumburg Villas management denied to comment.
