By

Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth, in cooperation with Joy! Lutheran Church, Woodland PTA, and local Gurnee families, will distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to Warren Township families in need.

The event is set for Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Viking Park Dance Hall, 4374 Old Grand Ave. in Gurnee.

Backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Information about low-cost resources will also be made available at the event.

Healthy Communities, Healthy Youth is a nonprofit organization comprised of governmental agencies, schools, businesses, churches, residents and students in Warren Township.

Established in 1999, HCHY’s mission is to inspire and collaborate with the community to develop healthy, responsible, caring and competent youth.

“One way HCHY is accomplishing its mission is by eliminating one financial stress for struggling families and allowing children to stay focused on their education. A good educational foundation has been shown to increase the stability of these children as they transition into adulthood.” said Lisa Sheppard, HCHY chairwoman.

Donations are still being accepted at Gurnee Park District community centers, Warren Township and Warren Newport Public Library. For details, call Gurnee Park District at (847) 623-7788.
