White Sox GM believes roster is set ... maybe

Before Friday night’s game against the Angels, general manager Kenny Williams said he’s going to leave the roster alone over the final two months and let the White Sox play it out.

Then again, maybe not.

“I think it’s a mistake to sit in this chair and feel like there’s not one more move to make,” Williams said.

There figures to be plenty of player movement around the majors in August, even though players have to clear waivers before trades can be made and potential deals can be blocked by other teams.

But as it stands now, Williams is satisfied with the way the Sox are set up for the stretch run and more than likely is finished making moves.

“We have what we have right here and we’ll fight together with these guys,” Williams said.

If the Sox keep on fighting like they have through the first 100-plus games of the season, Williams will be happy.

“I think we need to not change the approach,” the GM said. “Just take it day by day, try to win the first game of every series, which obviously is a tone-setter for the series and just grind it out like they always have. The work hasn’t changed.

“You just saw the guys go out there and take infield (Friday), the first day they got back into town. So the approach need not change. Let’s just keep grinding away and see where we end up when it’s all said and done.”

Wise move:Dewayne Wise, a popular outfielder with the White Sox in 2008-09, rejoined the organization Friday.Released by the Yankees on July 31 after batting .262 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI in 56 games, Wise agreed to a minor-league deal with the Sox and will report to Class AAA Charlotte. He is best known for making one of the greatest catches in major-league history while preserving Mark Buehrle#146;s perfect game on July 23, 2009.#147;Dewayne was having a good year with the Yankees,#148; general manager Kenny Williams said. #147;He did a lot of good things with the Yankees. Unfortunately, some of them were against us.#147;We feel he needs some at-bats because he hasn#146;t played in awhile, but we feel that at some point he can be part of the equation and help us on the bench.#148;Rotation change:Jake Peavy was scheduled to start Monday against the Kansas City Royals, with Chris Sale going Tuesday night on 10 days#146; rest.Sale is now going to start Monday, followed by Peavy. Sale hasn#146;t pitched since July 27 at Texas, and his velocity was noticeably down.Peavy started at Minnesota on Wednesday and threw 114 pitches in 8 innings. With six starters in the rotation for now, Sox manager Robin Ventura can make some alterations.#147;It gives us that flexibility with Sale and (Jose) Quintana; you can extend them and give them a few days off because you can bring everybody else back on five days if you want,#148; Ventura said.#147;And in certain situations you have an off-day. For right now this is what it is. I don#146;t know how long it#146;s going to go, but we have to see health-wise how everybody is.#148;The quote:#147;The fortunate thing when you#146;re on top of your division is you#146;re darn near last in the claiming order. So it helps me from doing something stupid.#148;#151; GM Kenny Williams on making waiver claims in August.
