• George Martinez, 21, previously of the 800 block of Parkway Avenue in Elgin, appeared in bond court Thursday morning on charges of first degree murder in a 2008 case for which he was extradited from Mexico Wednesday. Bail was set at $2 million after the gang-related shooting that killed 16-year-old Jaime Benitez and injured a second man on Halloween in 2008, according to police. Martinez was an early suspect in the investigation but fled the area before he could be arrested, police said. He had been held in a Mexican jail pending extradition hearings since June 22, 2011. Martinez must pay $200,000 to be released before his next court date, scheduled for Aug. 24, in St. Charles.
• A burglar stole a flat screen television and $150 cash from a residence on the first block of Lynch Street, Elgin, sometime between noon and 7 p.m. July 26, according to police reports.
• Dion Frederickson, homeless in Elgin, was arrested and charged with failure to inform police of information change Wednesday, according to police report. Frederickson is a registered sex offender and lived at a protected address until June 29 when police advised him to vacate his residence, reports said. He has three days to register at a new address and failed to inform police until Wednesday, reports said. Bail was set at $20,000, of which Frederickson must pay 10 percent to be released before his next court date, scheduled for Aug. 16 in St. Charles.
