Pingree Grove boy hospitalized after ‘car surfing’ accident

A 13-year-old Pingree Grove boy was in critical condition yesterday after a “car surfing” accident Monday night, police said. The boy’s older brother ran him over by mistake after the 13-year-old slid off the hood and hit his head on the ground, police said. The boy was airlifted from the scene, and charges against the older brother could be pursued depending on the boy’s condition. Full story.

Quinn proposes state assault weapons ban

Gov. Pat Quinn amended a state bill related to ammunition sales yesterday to add language prohibiting the manufacture, delivery, sale and possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and attachments. The proposal would specifically ban the AK-47, AR-15 and TEC-9. “It’s very clear that these particular weapons are not designed to do anything but to have human targets,” Quinn told reporters in Chicago. The murder trial of former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson will enter its second day today. The first day of the trial featured dueling explanations of his third wife’s death, with prosecutors alleging Peterson killed Kathleen Savio to keep his ex-wife’s hands off his money and Peterson’s attorneys arguing he was a victim of a media frenzy. Winnetka’s Dwyer helps Phelps make Olympic history

Michael Phelps set the Olympic record for most medals by winning his 19th Olympic medal yesterday as the United States took gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay with the help of Winnetka native Conor Dwyer. “I thanked those guys for helping me get to this moment,” Phelps said. “I told those guys I wanted a big lead. I was like, ‘You better give me a big lead going into the last lap,’ and they gave it to me. I just wanted to hold on. I thanked them for being able to allow me to have this moment.” Full story.

Dog rescued from Elk Grove house fire

A dog was rescued from an Elk Grove Village home during a Tuesday afternoon fire, officials said. Rescue crews found the home on the 800 block of E. Higgins Road fully engulfed in flames and the lone resident who was home outside the house, but the dog remained inside, officials said. Crews were able to rescue the dog and take it to an animal hospital. Full story.

The intersection of Route 31 and Route 176 in Crystal Lake is being reconstructed, which means the roadway will have intermittent closures while the pavement is repaired. Please find an alternate route around the construction, which will last until November of 2013. Full story.

Cubs trade Dempster for two prospects

It took until the day of the deadline to get a deal done, but after weeks of speculation surrounding the Cubs and a possible Ryan Dempster trade, Dempster is now a Texas Ranger. The Cubs acquired pitcher Kyle Hendricks and third baseman Christian Villanueva, who have both been at Class A Myrtle Beach. “The Rangers moved very fast,” Dempster said. “They obviously have a very, very good team. I’m going to go down there and hopefully just be a small piece of what they already have going.” Full story.

Danks done for the year, Liriano solid in Sox debut

Before White Sox starter Francisco Liriano made his debut last night against his former team, the Twins, the Sox announced starter John Danks is going to have season-ending shoulder surgery. Danks has been on the disabled list since May 20 but has made numerous attempts to rejoin the rotation. On the bright side, Liriano threw 6 strong innings and gave up just 2 earned runs in the Sox 4-3 victory. Full story.
