Indiana man sentenced to death in 1983 to be released
AUBURN, Ind. — A man sentenced to die 29 years ago for gunning down a northern Indiana town marshal is scheduled to be released from prison this weekend.
The Star of Auburn reports 47-year-old William Spranger is due to be released from the Plainfield Correctional Facility on Sunday.
He had been sentenced to die for shooting Marshal Bill Miner Jr. in the back on May 28, 1983, in Avila, 30 miles north of Fort Wayne, but the death sentence was overturned by the Indiana Supreme Court in 1995.
He then was sentenced to 60 years in prison. That sentence was reduced through good time credit and time deducted for furthering his education. He will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device on his leg for a year.
