Dragons drop Cougars 5-1
DAYTON, Ohio — Justin Trapp cracked a leadoff home run, but the Kane County Cougars wouldn’t score again in a 5-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons on Monday night at Fifth Third Field.
Stalin Gerson (5-7) coughed up his league-high 20th home run when Trapp took him deep to give the Cougars (50-50, 16-14) a quick 1-0 lead.
Gerson lasted 6 innings and gave up a hit in each of them, but the Cougars never had 2 hits in an inning as Gerson didn’t walk anyone while striking out five.
Kellen Moen (3-8) allowed the Dragons to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Jefry Sierra singled with one out and advanced to third on a single from Yorman Rodriguez. Sierra scored when Sean Buckley grounded out to second, tying the game at 1-1.
In the second, Joe Terry put the Dragons on top to stay as he belted a two-out, solo homer.
Dayton went to the longball again in the fifth as Juan Perez’s 2-run blast gave the Dragons a 4-1 cushion.
Moen left after 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and fanning five. Malcom Culver replaced Moen and was hooked for a run in the seventh when Yovan Gonzalez singled home Junior Arias.
Carlos Gonzalez and Mike Dennhardt combined for the final nine outs out of the Dragons’ bullpen.
