White Sox’ GM could be done dealing

There is still a week before major-league baseball’s nonwaiver trade deadline, but moves already are coming fast and furious.

The Tigers, who swept the White Sox in Detroit over the weekend while taking over first place in the AL Central, upgraded Monday when they added starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante in a trade from the reeling Miami Marlins in exchange for 21-year-old starter Jacob Turner.

Later, Ichiro Suzuki went was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the New York Yankees.

As for the Sox, general manager Kenny Williams always is looking to wheel and deal.

But before Monday night’s game against the Twins, Williams didn’t sound like additional trades were imminent. The White Sox’ GM said he did inquire on Ichiro and was told the veteran outfielder was not available.

Williams got third baseman Kevin Youkilis in a June 24 trade from Boston and acquired veteran reliever Brett Myers from Houston on Saturday.

“I don’t know what the probability is of us doing something impactfully,” Williams said about more moves before July 31.

“We think that we have added a couple of pieces that will be impactful for the next couple of months as is. Whether or not we can do something else, I don’t know.”

The White Sox’ offense had been slumping before coming alive against Minnesota on Monday night, but it looks like Youkilis is going to be the lone add to the regular lineup.

“I don’t know where you’d play if you brought a bat in here,” Williams said. “No. 1, getting an impact bat at this stage of the game is very difficult, and the options are dwindling as far as pitching goes.

“If it’s not an impact-type player, we don’t want to disrupt what we’ve got going on and the guys that have gotten you to this point.”

As for Myers, he should make an instant impact on the Sox’ bullpen. Getting Jesse Crain back from the disabled list also helps. Myers made his White Sox debut Monday night, pitching a third of an inning to end the eighth.

Even though Myers was Houston’s closer, manager Robin Ventura said Myers will help Crain and Thornton get rookie Addison Reed the ball in the ninth inning.

“I like pitching,” Myers said. “Just give me the ball. It doesn’t matter what role I’m in, I’m just ready to go help the team win.”

Williams’ latest trade was well received in the White Sox’ clubhouse.

“It’s not a surprise to me,” Paul Konerko said. “Kenny’s always gone out and made moves. If the team has shown we’re even remotely close to competing, he’s going to make a move.

“You definitely appreciate his confidence in the group that he’s going out and trading young prospects, minor-league guys, whatever it is, to try to make this 2012 team better.

“I know all the older guys, you definitely appreciate that because that’s what you’re looking for, to win.”
