Algonquin woman says theater victim from Crystal Lake saved her life

John Larimer, the Crystal Lake native killed during Friday’s horrific shooting in Aurora, Colo., saved his girlfriend’s life by covering her body with his, according to a report. Julia Vojtsek of Algonquin told WBBM Newsradio that Larimer held her head and protected her whole body with his as the gunman opened fire. “I’m hanging in there the best I can,” she said. “I’m just very, very sad. It’s unreal that this happened,” she told the station. Full story.

Ron Santo posthumously inducted into Hall of Fame

Although it took until after his death for Ron Santo to be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame, those who call the election “bittersweet” should finally drop the bitter, says Cubs beat writer Bruce Miles. Santo was elected into the hall last December, a year after he died, and was inducted Sunday. Santo’s wife, Vicki Santo, called Sunday a “great day” during her speech at the introduction. Top 10 perform for spot in Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent finals

The top 10 finalists in the Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent competition performed last night in an effort to move on to the next round, and will learn if they have made the Top 5 this week. Naperville to host Divorce Expo

Brides and grooms who have taken advantage of one-stop-shopping wedding expos or are planning on it, will soon have a similar setup for the opposite end of the spectrum: a divorce expo. The all-day expo will be held Aug. 18 in Naperville, and tickets will run $75 per person or $129 for a couple. The Divorce Expo grew out of the personal experience of founder Joost A. Allard. “We don’t get married with an exit strategy in mind,” says Allard, 51. Full story.

Carpentersville boy attends fundraiser to help cover medical costs

The family of a 3-year-old Carpentersville boy who is recovering from a kidney transplant was helped out by a group of about 30 people last night who gathered to raise money for the boy. The fundraiser was organized by Kalin Koychev, 33, of Wheeling, who donated his left kidney last month to Nathan Saavedra. “He used to just sit there. Now he’s on the move all the time,” said his mother, Tina Saavedra. Full story.

Traffic

More construction in Crystal Lake will begin today when the intersection of Route 31 and Route 176 is shut down and being reconstruction. The work will require the intermittent closures for the start of the project but will eventually reduce lanes. Full story.

White Sox swept by Tigers, knocked out of first

The White Sox are reeling, having lost five straight games and fallen 1½ games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central. The Tigers finished a three-game sweep of the White Sox Sunday on a day where Philip Humber allowed 6 runs in 3 innings, including 4 home runs. The Sox start a three-game series at home against the Minnesota Twins tonight. Full story.

Cubs also swept by Cardinals, outscored 23-1 in series

Like the White Sox, the Cubs were also swept by a division rival over the weekend, with the St. Louis Cardinals completing the sweep with a 7-0 victory Sunday. The Cardinals outscored the Cubs 23-1 during the series for their first sweep over the Cubs since June 2011. Full story.
