Cause of Round Lake Beach infant death unknown, under investigation

Authorities said there are no signs of foul play surrounding the death of a 5-month-old child in Round Lake Beach.

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey said an autopsy performed on the unidentified infant Thursday showed no signs of violence, trauma or disease. The child was pronounced dead at 10 a.m.

Yancey said the names of the infant and the parents are not being released.

The coroner’s office is awaiting toxicology reports from the state crime lab, he said, but it remains unclear if the child somehow suffocated itself during the night.

Round Lake Beach Deputy Chief Rich Chiarello said the child was discovered unresponsive by the parents about 8:45 a.m. at their Round Lake Beach home.

Chiarello said the death is under investigation, but only to try and give the parents an answer as to why the baby could have died.

“Were doing everything we can to investigate this because there is no obvious reasons for the child to die,” he said. “So, we will go through everything we can to get the best answers to the parents.”
