Outdoors notes: local fishing report

There has been a major muskie kill on North Spring Lake, near the Jake Wolff hatchery outside of Manito in central Illinois.

I received several reports of jumbo muskie floating on the lake’s surface as well as washing up on various shoreline locations.

Biologists believe higher-than-normal water temperatures appear to be culprit for the die-off. I have yet to hear any reports from South Spring (directly across the road) regarding any fish kill of trophy bass.

Local fishing reportFox Chain: Excellent bluegill action on the south end of Pistakee Lake. A few muskie bites on Lake Catherine.Fox River: Perhaps another strong rainfall that could add a major flushing of water could be helpful. Flathead cats are decent near outflow pipes.Lake Michigan: Big kings and rainbows being caught out of Waukegan. Anglers are finding fish in the 50-100 foot depths.Reality checkThere#146;s no discrimination here, but if you ain#146;t Cajun #151; or act like one #151; you probably don#146;t need to think about attending the upcoming casting call for the fourth season of the History Channel#146;s hit TV reality show #147;Swamp People.#148; The casting call will be held July 28 to Aug. 4 in the Louisiana towns of Layfayette, Baton Rouge and Houma, as well as in Beaumont, Texas.
