Temperatures fail to reach 100

Although temperatures fell short of the forecast 100s yesterday, the high reached 99 degrees at O’Hare International Airport. Don’t expect those temperatures to stay, as forecasts predict highs in the upper 80s today with a 20 percent chance of showers. Chicago has seen four 100-degree days this summer, just three shy of breaking a record for the most in a year. But some say hitting that record is still possible. Full story.

Movie theater slated for Hawthorn Mall

A 12-screen movie theater with room for 1,600 customers is the centerpiece of a proposed expansion at Vernon Hills’ Westfield Hawthorn Mall, according to plans unveiled last night. The building will be built between the existing JCPenney and Sears, and shops and restaurants will occupy the 19,000-square-foot ground floor, according to the plans. Prosecutors: Getaway driver in Oak Brook McDonald’s robbery charged

A 19-year-old has been charged for his alleged role as the getaway driver in the armed robbery of the flagship McDonald’s in Oak Brook last year. Authorities say they connected Kevin Duplessis of Hillside to the crime through phone records. Duplessis is accused of driving two Bellwood residents to the restaurant where they entered the store armed with handguns and wearing masks before fleeing with $384. Full story.

Lawsuit against West, now falls on his estate

Although Kane County Coroner Chuck West has died, a lawsuit filed by his former second-in-command will proceed. Kane County and West’s estate will be added to the lawsuit that accuses West of retaliating against Acting Coroner Loren Carrera for alerting authorities that West allegedly allowed a television to be stolen from the home of a dead man in 2007. SWAT team performs active shooter drill at Elgin H.S.

Elgin’s Gifford Street High School was taped off as officers armed with rifles performed an “active shooter” training drill inside the school Tuesday morning. The drill was conducted in coordination with both the Elgin Area School District U-46 and police. “Each year we meet to discuss incidents that occurred in schools and then take one of those incidents beyond what actually happened to a worst-case scenario,” a school district official said. Spectacular ‘Dark Knight’ rises to epic finale

The final chapter to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy might not reach the heights that “The Dark Knight” did, but “The Dark Knight Rises” gets three stars, according to Daily Herald film critic Dann Gire. Gire calls the film “an exhausting experience, reeking with ambition and intelligence.” The 2-hour, 45-minute flick is in theaters Friday. Full story.

Traffic

No major problems to report early on the area roadways early this morning. Motorists in Round Lake Beach need to find an alternate route around Rollins Road near Route 83. Rollins has been shut down due to railroad crossing repairs on the eastern side of the village. Full story.

The Cubs had their four game winning streak snapped Tuesday night after dropping the opening game of a three-game series against the Marlins by a score of 9-5. Full story.

Youkilis’s 3-run shot at Fenway leads White Sox to win

Red Sox turned White Sox Kevin Youkilis smacked his first home run as a visitor over the Green Monster at Fenway Park last night to lead the White Sox to a 7-5 win in the second game of the four-game series. Youkilis was greeted by cheers of “Yooouk!” for the second night in a row, even after his home run put the White Sox up 6-2. Full story.
