Carol Stream fireworks set for Labor Day weekend

Carol Stream’s canceled show will go on — but parade won’t

Carol Stream residents — as well as anyone else who likes fireworks and music — will get to formally celebrate one federal holiday a day before another.

The village’s July 4 fireworks and concert — canceled after major storms rumbled through the area — has been rescheduled to Sept. 2, the day before Labor Day. The village board officially approved a new date for the event Monday.

“You can stay up late, watch the fireworks, listen to music, and if you don’t have to work the next day, you can sleep in a little bit,” said Village Trustee Anthony Manzzullo.

The fireworks and concert, featuring Billy Croft & The 5-Alarm band, will take place at the Town Center at Gary Avenue and Lies Road starting at 6 p.m. The band will perform until 8 p.m. and the fireworks show is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.

The Fourth of July parade, however, won’t be rescheduled. It was to have featured 90 entries, and volunteers raised about $5,000 to fund it. Village President Frank Saverino said Monday officials considered rescheduling the parade as well, but logistically, it wouldn’t have worked out, with many floats already having been dismantled.

Village officials made the decision to postpone the festivities July 3, citing safety concerns related to the hot weather. The fireworks show was canceled due to dry conditions, and the parade was canceled because officials said it would have been difficult to prepare for it while village public works crews were busy cleaning up fallen tree limbs and branches from the storm.

The village’s contract with Melrose Pyrotechnics allows for one reschedule date if a show is canceled for inclement weather, according to Chris Oakley, assistant to the village manager.

Typically, there’s a 15 percent reschedule fee — in this case, $3,300 — but Melrose agreed to waive the fee with the provision that the village contracts with the company for a July 4, 2013 fireworks show, Oakley said.
