Music notes: Vets Filter visiting St. Charles

Unfiltered rock

The Midwestern rock band Filter (the brainchild of frontman and multi-instrumentalist Richard Patrick) rose to prominence during the post-grunge days of the mid-1990s, scoring a hit right away with “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” from the band's debut album, “Short Bus.” More than a decade later, the band is still going strong. 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, at the River Rock House (formerly Chord on Blues), 106 S. Riverside, St. Charles. $18. Go to river-rockhouse.com.

Punk veterans

Great news for punk fans: Recently reunited Swedish band Refused is performing with California band OFF! next week in Chicago. Refused released a series of blistering records in the 1990s before splitting up near the end of the decade. Suggestions for a reunion followed the band members for years, and early in 2012 the band acquiesced. OFF! consists of punk veterans Keith Morris (Black Flag), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) and Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From the Crypt). The band specializes in short, bruising punk songs and incendiary live shows. 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the Congress Theater, 2135 N. Milwaukee, Chicago. $29.50.
