Business Ledger honored in Inland Press contest

The Daily Herald Business Ledger was honored for a second year in a row by the Inland Press Association in its 2012 Newspaper Business Development Contest, which recognizes special sections, niche products and other publications that generate new revenue for their parent newspapers.

The Business Ledger, a bimonthly publication aimed at suburban business owners, executives, professionals and entrepreneurs, received a second-place honor in the stand-alone publication category. The contest judges called it a “great opportunity to expand newspaper skills and contacts into new revenue.” The publication received a second-place award in the same category in 2011.

“This award validates how we at the Daily Herald are adapting and changing with the world around us. We believe there is a need for business-to-business news presented in a perspective that is uniquely suburban,” said Scott Stone, Daily Herald Media Group executive vice president and general manager. “This award, along with other recent accolades, shows we are on the right path.

“The Business Ledger is a great complement to the Daily Herald and one more way we are reaching suburban readers with a unique product. Since acquiring the Business Ledger, we have discovered a real thirst for business-to-business news presented from a suburban perspective,” Stone added.

A total of 130 entries were received from newspapers in the U.S. and Canada, according to Inland. Contest winners ranged from salutes to hometown heroes to anniversary celebrations and business directories.

“The winners in this year’s Inland News Business Development Contest represent a truly impressive collection of innovative and creative projects,” said Inland Executive Director Tom Slaughter. “Those efforts ranged from in-paper promotions to specialty magazines and online packages. All the entrants demonstrate and reinforce their commitment to strengthening their brand in the communities they serve while working to sustain the newspaper in those cities and towns.”

Awards will be presented at Inland’s 2012 Newspaper Business Development Conference Aug. 9-10 in Chicago.
