Sox’ Floyd set back with sore arm

The White Sox’ starting rotation took another hit Sunday when Gavin Floyd was scratched from Monday night’s scheduled outing against the Red Sox with a sore right elbow and forearm.

Floyd reportedly was sent back to Chicago for tests, and an MRI revealed no structural damage.

John Danks (shoulder strain) has been on the disabled list since May 20, and his return date remains uncertain.

Philip Humber (elbow) has been on the DL since mid-June, but he’s expected to be activated Tuesday and start against Boston.

Dylan Axelrod is scheduled to come back out of the bullpen and start against the Red Sox in the series opener. Humber pitches Tuesday, with Jose Quintana likely to start Wednesday.

If Floyd makes a quick recovery, there is a chance he could take the mound Thursday at Boston.

That seems unlikely, so the White Sox might need to dip back into the minor leagues to call up a starting pitcher.

Class AAA Charlotte right-hander Simon Castro is a logical candidate, but he just came off the disabled list Sunday and pitched 3 shutout innings in an abbreviated start for the Knights.

Charlie Leesman and Pedro Hernandez are other options at Triple-A, and you can never discount White Sox general manager Kenny Williams making a trade for an established starter.
