Trapp’s big night washes out Whitecaps

Justin Trapp’s 3-for-5 performance at the plate, which included a towering leadoff home run to left field in the fifth inning, was enough for the Kane County Cougars as the hosts grabbed the first in a three-game series 6-4 Saturday evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

The Cougars’ Bryan Brickhouse earned his second victory, striking out six. Mike Giovenco, in his first appearance since returning from the disabled list, pitched a scoreless inning while Jason Mitchell picked up his second save by throwing a pair of scoreless innings.

The Cougars grabbed a 3-0 advantage after back-to-back singles from Trapp and Tim Ferguson opened the third inning. A fielding error by Whitecaps left fielder Jason Krizan plated Ferguson following Trapp’s hit, and Trapp later scored on a 2-run home run from Jorge Bonifacio.

West Michigan crept within a run as St. Charles native Jeff Holm drove in a pair of runs with a fifth inning single.

The Cougars answered with Trapp’s homer and with what proved to be the winning run as Jack Lopez, who had reached on a single, scampered home after a pair of West Michigan errors.

The last Cougars run came in the next inning as Trapp collected an RBI on an infield single.

Game two of the series is scheduled for a 5 p.m first pitch this afternoon.
