Complete effort powers Boomers

A day after the first 0-inning complete game in Schaumburg Boomers history, Matt Kuna and the Boomers bullpen did not allow an earned run in a 6-2 victory over the Normal CornBelters on Saturday at Boomers Stadium.

The first-place Boomers (31-19) raced out to a 3-run lead in the first, hit a franchise record 3 home runs to knock off the CornBelters (16-32) and set the stage for a chance at the sweep today.

Three consecutive singles got the Boomers on the board first as Steve McQuail (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) drove home Sean Mahley for a 1-0 Schaumburg lead. Frank Pfister scored on a fielder’s choice and McQuail crossed the plate on a Drew Heithoff infield single.

In just his fourth consecutive start, Kuna surrendered 2 fourth inning hits and no earned runs to claim his second win. The Griffith, Ind. native pitched 6 strong innings to lower his ERA to 3.08. Joe Parsons and Patrick Mincey (8 saves) provided quality relief.

Leading off the eighth inning, McQuail homered. Chad Mozingo did likewise on the next npitch.

Jereme Milons also belted his second home run of the season with a towering drive over the Miller Lite Party Deck in left field in the fifth.

Frank Pfister extended his hitting streak to 12 games – his second streak of at least 10 games as a Boomer — and Mozingo has reached base in 17 consecutive games.

The teams meet today with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch. The Boomers have added a special guest to the lineup as 1968 AL MVP Denny McClain will be on hand to sign autographs and sell copies of his two books.
