Donovan’s dominance does it for Boomers

Robby Donovan was dominant for the West Division-leading Schaumburg Boomers, throwing the first nine-inning complete game in franchise history Friday on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Normal CornBelters in the first game of second-half play in the Frontier League.

The second largest crowd of the season at Boomers Stadium (3,602) helped Donovan overshadow Normal starter Jacob Liedka (1-5). Donovan fanned seven and allowed six baserunners to improve to 6-2.

Normal took a 1-0 lead in the first when Steven Felix doubled to score K.C. Judge.

Donovan retired 11 straight following the first-inning run. The Boomers tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly from Jereme Milons.

The Boomers (30-19) took the lead in the seventh inning. Drew Heithoff bunted for a hit to open the inning, and Mike Valadez followed with a double. Milons and Karexon Sanchez lifted sacrifice flies to put the Boomers ahead for good.

Chad Mozingo’s 14-game hitting streak, a franchise record, came to an end. But the Boomers’ Frank Pfister extended his streak to 11 games with a double in the third.

The series continues at 6 p.m. Saturday night as Matt Kuna (1-0, 3.98) takes the mound for the Boomers opposite Tyler Stovall (1-5, 5.25).
