Possible ruling on terrorist suspect’s release

A federal judge in Chicago could announce her ruling on a terrorist suspect’s request to go live with his cousin while awaiting his September trial.

A Thursday status hearing comes a month after 29-year-old Shaker Masri (SHOCK’-uhr MAHZ’-ree) asked Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman to release him.

Coleman had said she’d rule within days. But as of this week, she hadn’t posted a ruling.

The Chicago man is accused of plotting to become a suicide bomber overseas.

Masri’s cousin told the judge he could stay in her suburban home along with her mother and kids. The defense added he could be required to wear an electronic-monitoring device.

But prosecutors have said Masri remains obsessed with martyrdom and his cousin wouldn’t be able to stop him from committing a terrorist attack.
