Fire displaces Aurora residents

A fire in the back of an Aurora duplex Thursday night has forced two residents from the home, officials said.

Firefighters saved a dog from the basement of the structure on the 900 block of Oliver Street, but said the fire never extended beyond the outside of the home.

Fire crews arrived at the scene just after 6:30 p.m., and remained there for about an hour, Aurora Fire Batallion Chief Mark Robinson said.

The blaze started on the ground floor in the rear of the home and spread up the siding and damaged the doors to both the first and second floor units, Robinson said.

The first floor unit received water damage, which forced the residents to find shelter elsewhere for the next few days, Robinson said.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the residents.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday night.

Officials estimated the damage at $5,000 to the structure and about $2,000 to the contents of the home.

No one was injured.
