More suburban Jews embrace conservative candidates

A June 8 Gallup poll showed Jewish American support for a Democratic president at 64 percent — a sizable majority but the lowest level since 1988. At the same time, poll results indicate support for Romney is at 29 percent, the highest level of Jewish support for a Republican presidential candidate in 24 years. Sleepy Hollow police chief planning next move after he retires

The longest-serving police chief in the history of Sleepy Hollow is ready to give up his badge July 31. Chief James Montalbano, 71, who started his policing career in the village, announced his retirement last week during a board meeting. St. Charles woman uses growing form of therapy to beat tumor

Heaven Alcorn's father died in 2008 from stomach cancer. So when her gynecologist discovered a tumor the size of a cantaloupe in her abdomen three years later, fear washed over the 33-year-old St. Charles woman. After surgery to remove a desmoid tumor, Alcorn turned to the Proton Center at Central DuPage Hospital in Warrenville to help keep it from coming back. Full story.

Bike race returns to Geneva

International Cycling Classic has been a training ground for some of the top cyclists in the world. The event came back to Geneva for the third consecutive year Sunday with the Mill Race Cyclery Classic. Attendees hoped to catch glimpses of the future Tour de France talent with professionals who would whip by at speeds approaching and topping 40 mph in the sprints. Full story.

The North wins again

The Battle of Fort Donelson was re-created over the weekend at the Lakewood County Forest Preserve near Wauconda, as part of the 21st annual Civil War Days, presented by the Lake County Forest Preserve District and the Lake County Discovery Museum. The Union prevailed in a battle that opened the Cumberland River in Tennessee to attacks from the North, but the fighting took a heavy toll on both sides. Full story.

Fireworks spark brush fire in Buffalo Grove

A 20-year-old has been charged with lighting fireworks that sparked a massive brush fire in Buffalo Grove Sunday afternoon. The blaze, which produced a 30-foot tall wall of flames, threatened dozens of homes and came within 15 feet of at least one home. Full story.

Woman charged in crash that killed Woodridge man

A Cicero woman has been charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with a late 2011 crash that killed a Woodridge man. Authorities originally believed the 26-year-old man who died was behind the wheel, but surveillance video shows Magali Padilla, 24, driving minutes before the rollover crash, police announced Sunday.
