2 injured in Lombard apartment fire

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a Lombard apartment fire that left two residents hospitalized with minor injuries, officials said Monday.

Crews responded about 4 p.m. Sunday to the six-unit building on the 0-100 block of West Ash Street. Assistant Lombard Fire Chief Jerry Howell said the fire was in the rear of an apartment on the southwest corner of the building.

Two residents of the unit managed to escape and were treated on the scene for minor injuries before being taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Howell said. Firefighters evacuated residents from the other apartments.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation Monday. The unit that caught fire was uninhabitable, Howell said, while the other units were clear for residents to return.

Firefighters estimated damage to the building and contents at $50,000.

Howell said the fact that it was an apartment building with several families triggered a large response from local firefighters and neighboring departments from Addison, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, Villa Park and York Center.
