Heat wave finally breaks; temps expected in low 80s Sunday

After three brutal days of 100-degree-plus temperatures, the heat wave blanketing the Chicago area broke Saturday morning.

The projected high for the day was 98 degrees, and that mark was reached shortly after 10 a.m. at O'Hare International Airport, according to the National Weather Service's Charles Mott.

The mercury started dropping after that. By 3 p.m., the temperature at O'Hare was 82 degrees, Mott said.

The all-time high for July 7 was 102 degrees, in 1980.

The temperature drop means the region didn't set a record for consecutive 100-degree days.

Temperatures on Sunday will be relatively cool compared to the previous week's broil. Highs are expected in the lower 80s, Mott said.
