Fesl sets up as Gordon Tech’s coach

After studying secondary education and starring for the women’s volleyball team at Cincinnati for the past four years, Anne Fesl’s new professional career adds up.

She has accepted a position as a math teacher at Gordon Tech High School in Chicago where she will also serve as the school’s varsity girls volleyball coach.

The former Hersey High School standout setter was a first-team all-Big East selection in 2009 after leading the Big East and ranking 17th nationally in assists per set (11.35).

She was selected as a second-team all-Big East honoree in 2008 after ranking second in the league in overall and conference-only games, and 26th nationally in assists per set.

Fesl ranks third on UC’s career assists list with 4,249 assists.

Fesl’s Sky High 17-Red team recently won the AAU national championship for the 17-Club division. She was named an All-American and tournament MVP.

Julia Thompson of Barrington High School was also named an All-American.

Rugby: Kevin Lydon, a recent graduate of Conant, has signed a letter of intent to play rugby and attend Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Lydon is a two-year captain of the Arlington Stallions Rugby Club, a four time member of the IYRA ALL-State team and he participated in the 2011 USA Rugby HS all-American program.

The Davenport Panthers are the two-time USA Rugby Collegiate Division D1-AA national champions.

“We are excited to have Kevin join us for this very important period in our program’s development as we move to Division D1-A, where we will be competing with the very best college teams in the country,” said Davenport coach Kruger Van Biljon. “Kevin will be playing with and against the best college players in the USA, many of which will eventually play for our national team, the Eagles.”

Lydon is the first member of the Arlington Stallions Rugby Club to earn an athletic scholarship to play rugby.

“Our entire club is proud of Kevin’s accomplishments on the field and in the classroom,” Stallions head coach Paul Bergman said. “He has worked very hard for this honor and we can’t wait to see him take his rugby to this elite level of play.”
