Crews in Northbrook clearing wreckage of derailed train
Crews are clearing the wreckage after a freight train hauling coal derailed and took out a railroad bridge in Northbrook.
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says the weight of the piled-up cars caused the bridge to collapse over a roadway between Glenview and Northbrook. There were no reports of injuries.
Altogether, 31 cars came off the track, most of them piling into the gap left by the collapsed bridge.
Davis says crews expect to have the scene cleared by the end of Thursday, but the road won’t reopen until the bridge is replaced. He says there’s no timeline yet for completion of that work. In the meantime, the rail bed will be reconstructed with gravel to allow trains to run until the bridge is replaced.
