Teen OK after being struck by bullet in Glendale Heights

A bullet that apparently was fired in the air July 4 injured a teenager while she sat on a bench in a Glendale Heights park, police said Thursday.

The 17-year-old girl was struck between 10 and 10:15 p.m. at Gladstone Park, 145 Gladstone Drive. Glendale Heights police said they believe the shooting is the result of someone firing a gun “in the celebration of July 4.”

“There's no guarantee that that's what it is,” Det. Ron Kirstein said. “But that's what it appears to be at this time.”

The girl was sitting on the bench with her mother and aunt when they heard “a little bit of a whistling noise.” The victim told investigators she felt like something bit her.

Luckily for the girl, the bullet had lost most of its momentum. “When she got up, a bullet fell from her,” Kirstein said.

The girl was treated at a hospital and released.

Authorities say they aren't sure what type of gun was used.

Anyone with knowledge of someone discharging a firearm in the area is asked to call Kirstein at (630) 909-5455.
