Music notes: Wilco, Andrew Bird rock Cougars' ballpark

Rocking the vote

Acclaimed Chicago-based rock band Wilco will headline a special show in the suburbs this weekend. The band, known for its literate, multitextured country-tinged rock, will be joined by fellow Chicagoan Andrew Bird and soul group The Congregation. Head Count, a national nonpartisan voter registration group, will hold a voter-registration drive at the show as well. A fireworks display will take place afterward.

5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark (home of the Kane County Cougars), near the intersection of Roosevelt and Kirk roads in Geneva. (There is no baseball game scheduled that day.) Tickets start at $50. Go to jamusa.com.

Worldly festival

Terra Sounds, a Glenview-based art/music school, will host the Terra Sounds Music Festival this weekend in Palatine. The all-day event will include an eclectic mix of musical styles, from Russian folk choir Golosa to Chicago funk-rock band Kick The Record.

Festival starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $30. Go to durtynellies.com.

Time running out

The annual Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago's celebration of cutting-edge rock, takes place July 13-15 at Union Park. A few tickets to the show remain as of this writing, but they probably won't last long. This year's fest includes some of the hottest bands on the scene, such as Wild Flag, Cloud Nothings, Japandroids and Sleigh Bells. In addition to all the live music, the fest will host activities such as Book Fort, a collection of independent publishers (McSweeneys and Chicago-based Featherproof Books among them), readings and book-centered panel discussions, and the popular CHIRP Record Fair hosted by the Chicago Independent Radio Project.

Gates open at 3 p.m. Friday, July 13, and noon Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15, at Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., Chicago. $45 per day. Go to pitchforkmusicfestival.com.
