Storm knocks out power to thousands

More than 150,000 ComEd customers remained without power as of late last night, while the utility company says it might not be finished assessing the outages until Tuesday. The storm struck the Western suburbs, specifically DuPage County, the hardest causing extensive damage to homes and businesses. A roof was blown off an Addison building, causing a hazardous materials leak during the height of the storm. Full story.

Man drowns while swimming in Deep Lake

A Chicago man drowned while attempting to swim to shore from a row boat in Lake Villa’s Deep Lake yesterday. Police said 28-year-old Lukasz Barabasz was with friends on the boat when he decided to attempt to swim to shore from the center of the lake. Barabasz’s friends lost sight of him as they were rowing to shore and later found his body near a swim area. Full story.

Joe Walsh gives presentation against Obama’s health care plan

Musician Joe Walsh was in Schaumburg playing a concert in support of Tammy Duckworth yesterday, and Congressman Joe Walsh was in Elk Grove Village giving his critique of President Obama’s health care plan, which was deemed constitutional last week. “I said a couple of years ago, Obamacare was the most important issue in the year 2010,” he said. “John Roberts, the Supreme Court, just made it the issue in 2012.” Full story.

Robinson’s Ribs win at Naperville’s Ribfest

Robinson’s Ribs was declared the winner in the best ribs category at yesterday’s Naperville Ribfest. The event was moved inside due to nasty weather. Best sauce went to Porky N’ Beans, followed by Johnson’s BBQ and Willingham’s BBQ. Desperado’s BBQ took second in best ribs, and Uncle Bub’s took third. Full story.

Mundelein teen dies in car crash

A 17-year-old Mundelein boy was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning near Grayslake. Police said Harrison Fischer was driving a Ford Escape that struck a utility pole and a tree on West Chardon Road near Route 60. Neither drugs nor alcohol is believed to have factored into the crash, which remains under investigation. Full story.

School districts keep superintendent searches secret

On a single March night in DuPage County, one school superintendent arrived — and another departed — in a cloud of secrecy at two of the state’s largest school districts. When the dust settled, residents and taxpayers in both districts were left scratching their heads. What happened in both districts is an example of an ongoing debate. “If every time you apply for a job it’s in the newspaper, that’s going to limit you,” said a superintendent search firm executive. Palatine gamers set Guinness record

Andrew McCurley, of Palatine, now has claim to four world records. He joined 122 others at the village’s Hometown Fest on Sunday to set a Guinness World Record for most people playing handheld games at the same time in the same place. McCurley also helped set records for the largest number of people simultaneously high-fiving, dressed up as superheroes, and in harmonica band. “Seems like a fun thing to do so I do it,” McCurley said. Hot and humid today with a possible thunderstorm popping up in spots. Partly cloudy, muggy and warm with temperatures in the mid 70s this morning. It will rise to about 92 degrees this afternoon, before dipping back into the mid 70s tonight. Hot and humid temperatures are expected to stay around all week, so keep the air on. Full story.

Traffic

No major problems to report on the area highways and tollways. Many intersections in the western suburbs remain blocked due to power issues. Some of those closings include Geneva and Winfield, Winfield and County Farm, County Farm and Roosevelt. People should find alternate routes around the downed and blocked lines. Full story.

Cubs sweep

Travis Wood picked up his third straight victory Sunday as the Cubs beat the Houston Astros 3-0 to sweep the three-game series and gain their fifth win in six games. Full story.

Sox lose to Yankees

The New York Yankees again rode the long ball to a 4-2 win Sunday over the White Sox for a series split between division leaders. Full story.

Rockets offer Omer Asik pricey contract

The Houston Rockets have offered Bulls center Omer Asik an offer of $25.1 million over three years, which the Bulls have three days to match once it becomes official. Asik, who is a restricted free agent, is a solid defender, but averaged just 2.9 points and 2.8 rebounds last season. The Bull have said they plan on matching offers for Asik. Full story.
