New on DVD: 'Artist,' '21 Jump Street'

“The Artist”

Winner of five Academy Awards, including best picture, the silent black-and-white film “The Artist” was set at a time when American cinema was changing from silent films to the talkies. Movie star George Valentin (Best Actor Oscar winner Jean Dujardin), attending the premiere of his latest film with his adorable dog, meets young actress Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), an extra on his next film. They share instant chemistry, one that carries through as Peppy's star rises and George's career falls apart with the advent of talkies. When George is let go by his studio boss (John Goodman), he decides to finance his own silent movie. It doesn't work out, and we see and feel the sadness in his life.

This is an emotional and wonderful film, filled with humor, tenderness and a delightful musical score.

“21 Jump Street”

The box-office hit “21 Jump Street” was inspired by the television show that helped make Johnny Depp a star. In the film version, the story of cops who go undercover as high school students is played for laughs. Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were total opposites in high school and did not get along. Years later, they meet again at the police academy. When their first assignment goes bad, they are given a second chance as undercover police officers sent back to school to infiltrate a drug operation. The two leads work well together, and there are lots of laughs along with action to keep you entertained throughout.
