After Aurora standoff ends peacefully, three teens charged
Three Aurora teens are facing charges after causing a Thursday afternoon police standoff in Aurora.
Abraham Salgado, 17, who lives in the building where the standoff occurred, was charged with theft by possession, two counts of not having an FOID card, possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, and unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon. The charges are felonies, and Salgado was charged as an adult, which is why he is being identified.
The other two teens, also 17, were charged as juveniles with resisting arrest and unlawful contact with a street gang member while on probation. Those charges are misdemeanors, and the pair were each released to their parents.
A chase began around 4:35 p.m. Thursday when Aurora police officers arrived at a home on the 600 block of North Avenue to serve a search warrant. As officers approached the home, they said one of the accused minors spotted them and ran back into the house to warn the other residents.
The three teens, along with an 18-year-old Aurora man who was in the home at the time, jumped out of a rear window and ran north through backyards in the area, police said.
Officers ran after them and caught the 18 year old on 600 block of East Benton Street, after using a Taser on him, police said. The three 17 year olds continued to run and entered the first floor unit of a two-story apartment on the 600 block of East Downer, where they and a 23-year-old man refused to leave.
Police said they cleared a second floor apartment, occupied by several neighbors. They also blocked off the street for an hour and told residents to stay out of the way until the after about 5:30 p.m., when they arrested the four people in the lower apartment without any injuries or shots fired.
Next, officers searched the home on North Avenue and said they recovered approximately 15 grams of cocaine, 252 grams of cannabis, three handguns, and numerous rounds of live ammunition. During a search of the home on Downer, police reported recovering about 163 grams of cannabis, two handguns, $400 in cash, and an Aurora police radio that had been reported stolen earlier this year.
The charges against Salgado were in relation to the items discovered at the Downer Place home, police said. The other two men, ages 18 and 23, were released without charges. Officials are continuing to investigate and said they may file more charges.
