Traffic delays as woman jumps off 290 bridge near Itasca

Traffic was completely blocked for about 20 minutes Friday on westbound Interstate 290 near Itasca, after a woman jumped off the Irving Park Road bridge just after 3 p.m., police said.

The 34-year-old woman may have been struck by a vehicle, but she is expected to recover from her injuries, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Bob Huber said.

“The vehicle did stop and (the driver) said, ‘I might have struck her,'” Huber said.

The expressway was shut down immediately after the accident, but by 3:30 p.m., traffic was moving along the right lane and right shoulder. Some tire debris had closed down the eastbound lanes, but crews were working to clean it up, Huber said.

The eastbound traffic also experienced severe delays due to onlookers.

Itasca Police Chief Scott Heher said the woman was conscious and alert when taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove shortly afterward.

The Illinois State Police are investigating, but Heher said no charges were filed so far Friday.
