The Suburbs This Weekend: Wiener dogs, books and Gay Pride

Downtown Glen Ellyn BookFest, various venues, Glen Ellyn: BookFest runs on Saturday, June 23. Events begin at 8 a.m. Various authors and speakers will be on hand for the event, including.keynote speaker David Finch, author of “The Journal of Best Practices: Memoir of a Marriage, Asperger Syndrome and One Man's Quest to Be a Better Husband.” For full festival schedule, visit bookfest.org.

All varieties of “wiener dogs,” including dachshunds, basset hounds, corgis and “wiener shape” mixes, are invited to race at the Fifth Annual Dachshund Derby on Sunday, June 24, at Petland, 815 Rollins Road, Round Lake Beach. All breeds of dogs are invited to take part in a costume contest. Other event highlights include carnival games, family friendly games, raffles, pet vendors, pet demonstrations and more. Free general admission. There is a fee for some activities. To enter a dog in the race, the charge is $10 (includes the costume contest). Each additional dog in a family is $5.
