Inverness Garden Club awards scholarships

The annual spring luncheon of the Garden Club of Inverness is a time when members create the centerpieces for the tables and enjoy a luncheon while reflecting on the many educational and gardening experiences of the group over the past year.

It was also the time when the Garden Club of Inverness awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Christian Mark LaBarr and Erik Bethke.

LaBarr, a Barrington High School graduate, was already on his way back to the University of Montana, where he is majoring in environmental studies with a focus on sustainable food and farming.

Bethke, a Palatine High School graduate who attends George Washington University majoring in environmental studies and geography, was able to accept the scholarship personally at the luncheon.

The scholarship committee was chaired by Marilyn Dutcher and included Michelle Kurtzweil, Betty Ann Dailey, Melodie Moroney and outgoing president Melinda Foys.

The club’s next event is a tour of four members’ gardens. Regular open meetings will resume at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 20 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 630 Quentin Road, Palatine.
