Des Plaines Memorial Day Ceremony pays homage to veterans

Local veterans, Des Plaines officials and members of the community gathered for a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Lake Park Memorial Pavilion on Monday, May 28.

Following a patriotic medley by the Maine West High School Band, under the direction of Bernie Gerstmayr, VFW Post 2992 Commander Steve Schaefer welcomed the community and introduced the national anthem.

American Legion Chaplain Phil Campbell gave an invocation and Mayor Martin J. Moylan addressed the crowd, thanking all veterans, attendees and participants. Commander Lee A. Donaldson, United States Navy Executive Officer, was the keynote speaker.

Other highlights included the narration of the “Building of a Battlefield Monument,” the laying of memorial wreaths, the Honor Guard Salute directed by American Legion Honor Guard, Maine West Buglers performing taps and a convocation by VFW Ladies Auxiliary acting chaplain Mary Murphy.
