Private buildings join Chicago retrofitting effort
A program in Chicago to retrofit city buildings to make them more energy efficient and save money is being extended to commercial buildings.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the owners of 14 buildings with a total of 14 million square feet have signed on to the program. It will ultimately save them more than $5 million a year in energy costs.
Among the buildings that will be retrofitted are NBC Tower, the Wrigley Building, CNA’s headquarters and Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers.
Earlier this year, Emanuel launched Retrofit Chicago, a program that called for spending as much as $225 million to make city buildings more energy efficient. Officials said it would result in a savings of $20 million a year in energy costs.
