Two fishing derbies this weekend in Northwest suburbs

Two fishing derbies are being held this weekend in the Northwest suburbs, with Cabela’s, the outdoors store in Hoffman Estates, a sponsor of both of them. On Saturday, the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce, Sears Holdings Corp., Hoffman Estates Community Bank and Cabela’s are holding the 17th annual Community Fishing Derby. The biggest fishing derby in Illinois, it will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at South Ridge Lake, 1450 Freeman Road. There are three age groups: ages two through six, seven through 16 and adult. The cost to fish for on-site registration is $5. For information, call (847) 781-9100. On Sunday, Cook County Commissioner Timothy Schneider is holding a free fishing derby from 9 a.m. to noon in Busse Woods Grove 25 in Elk Grove Village. The entrance is off Higgins Road east of I-290. No fishing license is needed. People can register at Cabela’s, call (847) 645-0400, or email tim.schneider@cookcountyil.gov and leave a name, address, email address and phone number.
