Guilty plea in Aurora elder abuse case
One of three Aurora siblings accused of elderly abuse and neglect of their mother, who had part of a leg amputated after she was discovered in squalor, has admitted to his role in the crime.
Kevin Roberson, 43, of the 1100 block of North Randall Road, will be sentenced July 11 by Kane County Judge Clint Hull after entering a cold plea this week.
In a cold plea, a defendant admits guilt without an agreed upon sentence with prosecutors and leaves the decision up to the judge.
Roberson faces two to five years in prison for the felony, but probation also is an option.
His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Judy Kullenburg, could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.
Alan Roberson, 55, and Connie Roberson, 51, both of the 1100 block of Randall Road, and are due in court on June 15 and June 21 respectively. Alan Roberson's attorney has indicated his client might enter a cold plea.
The trio were arrested in October 2011 after their elderly mother was discovered to be living in squalor.
Authorities said Martha Roberson, now 78 and living in a rehabilitation center, was covered in bedsores and had gangrene so severe that her right leg had to be amputated below the knee. She was confined to a love seat and also had large open wounds and maggots crawling on her.
Prosecutors have said the trio kept her in the home because they wanted her Social Security checks.
For Kevin Roberson, the charges are not his brush with the law.
According to court records, he received two years probation and a $1,385 fine for felony possession of a controlled substance after an arrest by Aurora police in 1995.
He also has a pending driving under the influence charge from the Kane County Sheriff's Department from October 2010.
The Robersons are being held at the Kane County jail on $50,000 bail and are to have no contact with their mother if they are released pending trial.
