Guinea Pigs: 10 things you need to know

• A guinea pig's expected life span is 4 to 8 years.

• Guinea pig caregivers should be at least 10, unless parents are willing to fill in with cleaning and care.

• Guinea pigs require vitamin C supplements to remain healthy (check with your local pet store or veterinarian for the best sources).

• Guinea pigs typically require a daily diet of fresh filtered water, guinea pig pellets, Timothy hay, leafy greens, some fruit and/or supplements.

• Care providers must carve out time to play with their little furry friends on a regular basis.

• Cages should be roomy enough to allow the guinea pig to roam, perhaps 30-by-15 inches.

• Cages must be cleaned regularly (at least weekly) and bedding fluff must be changed out regularly.

• Avoid using cedar and pine bedding as the resins might irritate the skin.

• Visit guinea pigs at rescue centers and pet shops before committing so that you know ahead of time if you are allergic to them.

• Do your homework; know what you are committing to before taking your pet home.
