Chicago police proclaim readiness for NATO protests

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the department is ready to provide a safe environment for protesters demonstrating against the NATO summit.

Activists have been holding protests every day this week in Chicago.

McCarthy said Wednesday there have been a dozen arrests during four separate protests. Total attendance at the rallies was around 300 people. He says 10 of the arrests were for acts of civil disobedience and two were for battery on police officers.

Protesters have planned their biggest demonstration for Sunday, when the leaders of about 50 nations will meet at McCormick Place.

McCarthy says officers are equipped to handle up to 15,000 activists. And he says police can ratchet that up if more demonstrators show up.
