Three are champions in District 59 Science Bowl

The School District 59 third annual Science Bowl was held at the Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 Administration Center in Arlington Heights on April 20.

Student finalists from Friendship, Grove and Holmes Junior High Schools competed to determine the districtwide winner and two runner-up finalists.

The Science Bowl was established to provide a challenge to district students in the area of science. Each science classroom administered a special assessment to determine the classroom representative to the all-school Science Bowl.

Students fielded questions that covered human biology and health, earth and space science, biology, physical science and chemistry. The Holmes Junior High Team was named team winner for scoring the highest number of team points before the final round began. The team was awarded a plaque for their efforts.

The final round was a hard-fought contest before the winner and two runner-up finalists were determined. Eddie Brown of Holmes Junior High finished in first place, receiving an iPod and a trophy as the champion of the 2012 District 59 Science Bowl.

Eddie attended District 59’s Forest View Elementary School before entering Holmes Jr. High. Melissa DeLaCruz of Grove Junior High finished second and Matthew Duffy, sixth grader from Friendship Junior High was third, rounding out the top three finalists.
