Toddler dies from injuries in Naperville bus crash

A 23-month-old Oswego girl has died from injuries she sustained a week ago in a bus accident in Naperville.

Jada Akyeah died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, officials from the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Officials said Jada is an organ donor and an examination would be performed after her donation was completed Monday.

The toddler was injured in a crash when the girl’s mother drove a minivan into an oncoming school bus to avoid rear-ending a car that stopped in front of her in south Naperville, authorities said.

Police say Genevieve Hanson, 36, of Oswego, was driving a Chrysler Town and Country minivan south on 248th Avenue and swerved into northbound traffic to avoid a stopped car that was making a left turn onto Lapp Lane.

Naperville Sgt. Gregg Bell said Monday that the crash is still being investigated and police are waiting for toxicology reports to be returned before pursuing charges against Hanson.

The school bus, headed north on 248th, hit the van causing it to roll on its roof.

Hanson, her 4-year-old son and the 56-year-old driver of the otherwise unoccupied bus all were treated for minor injuries at Edward Hospital in Naperville.
